March of Dimes

 

Founded in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt and originally known as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. Their mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

 

 

Some important facts:

  • Premature birth, or birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, is the leading cause of death for newborns

  • 1 in 8 babies are born prematurely in the US

  • 534,000 babies are born too soon each year

  • 45,250 preemies will be born this month alone

  • 13 babies will die today from complications of their early birth

  • Today, more than 1,400 babies in the U.S. will be born prematurely.
